I've been remiss this week in not mentioning the passing of Ibrahim Ferrer. Posted by Picasa

I loved him. And I'm an idiot for not seeing him when I had the chance. It's as dumb as not seeing Johnny Cash.

A couple of people I used to work with visited Cuba in 1999, a year or so after the Buena Vista Social Club album came out. And they were wondering through Inbrahim Ferrer's neighborhood asking people on the street if they knew where he lived. They asked a young kid, and he said: "Sure. He's my grandfather. Do you want to meet him?" So the kid took them to Ferrer's apartment. And Ferrer greeted them warmly, sat down at the piano and played and sang a concert's worth of songs for them.

If I travel the world five times over, I'll probably never have something that cool happen to me.
